I understand that the standard deviation gives you more deviation when there are certain data points that are far from its mean.
My question is why is the standard deviation is more important than the mean deviation although the mean deviation gives the real dispersion from the mean?

I understand that the standard deviation gives you more deviation when there are certain data points that are far from its mean.
My question is why is the standard deviation is more important than the mean deviation although the mean deviation gives the real dispersion from the mean?
